Dr Gerberding: So, Kayla, like, right now, we’re kind of managing this as a US-centric situation, although H5N1 is not just a U
S-centric problem But yet, communication has to be relevant globally And I’m sure there’s a lot of anxiety on the part of the food production industry in terms of trade and the global impact of – concern about the safety of our cattle industry, et cetera
So how are you managing the global communication around this kind of unfolding? This is the hardest part of an outbreak, is the early days when there’s so much uncertainty – how bad is it, how bad will it be, who’s affected, how far will it go? You just don’t know So how are you handling that? Our editors are huge proponents of this strategy In addition to putting excess leftovers and produce on ice, we often have a stash of these freezer-friendly breakfasts and freezable casseroles ready to thaw, cook, and devour on the busiest of daysPrevention Choose pasteurized milk and dairy products, making sure to read labels carefully

”Others are questioning whether the FDA has gone far enough A significant concern, raised in a 2016 petition to the FDA from the Natural Resources Defense Council and several other environmental groups, is that ending the use of medically important antibiotics for growth promotion doesn't really solve the problem These groups argue that growth promotion accounts for only 10% to 15% of medically important antibiotic use in food animals, a figure based on estimates from the Animal Health Institute, a group that represents veterinary pharmaceutical companiesThese two conditions are similar, and many symptoms overlap
While meningitis affects the covering of the brain and spinal cord, encephalitis affects the tissue of the brain itselfThe veterinarians I know in the poultry field have a high moral and ethical obligation to their profession, Johnson says They take this very seriously, and they understand the problem of antibiotic resistance just as much, if not more, than the public doesWhat to know Pasteurization is crucial for milk safety, killing harmful germs that can cause illness
Consuming raw milk can lead to serious health risks, especially for certain vulnerable populations Choosing pasteurized milk and dairy products is the best way to safely enjoy the nutritional benefits of milkOutbreaks of H5N1 continue to rise in dairy cattle and poultry, as well as in other wild and domesticated animals, including the first confirmed infection in a pig Human cases also continue to occur, primarily—but not exclusively—in people who had exposure to infected animals
In this Q&A, adapted from the November 26 episode of Public Health On Call, Stephanie Desmon speaks with Meghan Davis, DVM, PhD ’12, MPH ’08, associate professor in Environmental Health and Engineering, and Andrew Pekosz, PhD, professor in Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, for an update on the spread of H5N1 in the US They share updates on viral sequencing and patterns of spread, the potential for economic impacts and interruptions in the food supply, risks to the general public, and concerns about how a presidential administration change in January may impact public health’s ability to mount a sufficient responseJust walking into any old grocery store, Alabama citizens are unlikely to find unpasteurized milk on the shelf next to the whole milk and the 2 percent reduced fat
But if they look hard enough, there’s plenty of this “raw milk” to be found—for “pet consumption only,” of courseennuyer (vr) 1
