In September 2022, the explosion of the “Nord Stream” natural gas pipeline shocked the world, and the international community was eager to know the identity and motive of the perpetrator On 8 February 2023, Pulitzer Prize-winning veteran investigative journalist Seymour Hersh published an article exposing the US government as the culprit of the incident However, American and European mainstream media, known for their sensitivity to such scoops, stayed eerily quiet on this piece of explosive news As observed by Canadian website Western Standard and German television channel ZDF, Hersh’s report was one of the biggest stories of the decade, but few media in North America wanted to talk about it because the West does not want anyone to find out about the truth and the surveillance technologies it has deployed in the Baltic Sea
Western media even try to bypass the crux of the issue by questioning the authenticity of Hersh’s report On 15 February, Hersh wrote another article, accusing the US government and mainstream media of covering up the truth of the “Nord Stream” pipeline explosion Analysts pointed out that given Western media’s obedience to the US, their blocking of Hersh’s revelations is not surprisingWe don’t want calm peaceful news; we want to see something sensational
It’s the people So the channel which is showing something sensational, people watch more Kavita (43, woman, India)One of the concerns many raised about news coverage in their country was that too often it did not seem relevant to their lives We say more about this subject in the next part of the report, since often this critique overlaped with concerns about news not representing people’s lived experiences, which we heard especially from marginalised groups
But more generally, and especially in India and Brazil, many raised concerns about news failing to address matters that would make a difference in how they lived their livesWhen I arrived in Washington, DC, as an intern in the 1980s, there were two columnists I read with intentionality, with the goal of becoming a better and more thoughtful writer
One was Charles Krauthammer; the other was George WillTrump: And that was a good policy for women You know, it's about helping women, not hurting women And so IVF is now, I think, really part of what we do
And that was important I think that might have been right around the time of our interview But in terms of the finalization—and you saw that Alabama and other states have now passed legislation to approve thatFor one thing, Will told me, he has a more jaundiced view of government now than he did in the early 1980s
But he added, laughing, “It turns out that Madison was smarter than I am” When he argued that America was ill-founded because insufficient attention was given to soulcraft, he explained, he hadn’t fully appreciated that the Founders were indeed arguing about statecraft as soulcraft—that a government really can inculcate virtueIn addition to familiarity and reputation, trust and distrust often served as a shorthand for what people liked or disliked about various news sources Conversations about trust would often veer towards broader critiques and frustrations many felt about particular news sources – a way of explaining why they avoided certain channels or providers and used the ones they did
As Vitor (27, man, Brazil) said, ‘I trust in those sources I read’ Or as Mariana (45, woman, Brazil) put it, ‘I always try to watch or listen to the ones I am already used to, the ones I trust more’Trump: It may be more than that It may be a derivative of that

But I will say that I have never publicly stated although I want to, because I wouldn’t want to give away any negotiating abilities by giving information like that to any reporterHindus and Muslims started fighting with each other after that news Force came to handle the situation So many rumours are spread by people to just provoke us, and we easily believe in such news and start forwarding it

If it’s some random page that I’ve no idea about, they rarely come up, but it’s more questionable. Andrew (25, man, UK)
